Final Jeopardy: Best Picture Wordplay (6-13-13)

The Final Jeopardy question (6/13/2013) in the category “Best Picture Wordplay” was:

From 2005, it’s the last Best Picture Oscar winner. whose name is just one syllable

New champ Andre Green won $25,200 yesterday, taking down a 3-day champ. Today he faces off against these two players: Megan Hickey from Seattle, WA; and Matt Noble from Mobile, AL.

Megan found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “From ‘L’ to ‘M'” before the first break. She was in a tie for the lead with Andre. They both had $800, $200 more than Matt. Rather than bet the $1,000 allowance, she made it a true Daily Double and she was RIGHT.

Matt finished in the lead with $6,800. Megan was second with $2,600 and Andre was last with $1,200.

Matt found the first Double Jeopardy Daily Double in “Authors on Themselves” rather quickly. He now had the lead with $7,600, $4,200 more than Megan in second place. He bet $5,000, guessed “Von Goethe” but that was WRONG.

Matt found the last Daily Double in “War of Words.” He was back in the lead with $5,400, $4,000 more than Megan in second place. This time he bet $5.00, and said it was a longbow. That was WRONG.

Bolt to the top of the class if you know an arbalest is another name for this medieval weapon. show

Matt finished in the lead with $12,195. Megan was next with $5,800 and Andre was in third place with $3,600.

ALL of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS “CRASH”?

At the 78th Annual Academy Awards, held on 3/5/2006, “Crash” won against “Brokeback Mountain,” “Capote,” Munich,” and “Good Luck, and Good Night.” There are plenty of one word titles that won Best Picture, but the only other one syllable Best Picture we found is the first picture to ever win an Academy Award, “Wings,” a 1927 silent film. Andre bet $42 and finished with $3,642.

Megan bet $1,401, finishing with $7,201.

Matt bet $195 so he ended up with $12,390 and won the match and he is now the new Jeopardy! champ.

LOL, yes. That first round seemed like a massacre – then Matt got clobbered on the DD. I don’t think I would ever do what he did on the next one and the $5 bet. I’d just assume my luck would change and I’d get the $$ back. Couldn’t handle only betting $5 because I would really be too embarrassed if I knew it and bet that little amount!
