Final Jeopardy: Airline History (5-31-12)
The Final Jeopardy question (5/31/2012) in the category “Airline History” was:
Clipper Goodwill, a Boeing 727, took this airline’s last passengers from Barbados to Miami December 4, 1991.
Two day champ Richard Block returns today to face off against these new players: John Baker, from Dixon, IL and Scotti Whitmire, from Knoxville, TN.
Alex decided to mention in his opening remarks that Richard has been “winning ugly,” which on Jeopardy! means not getting the right answer in Final Jeopardy! and not earning a lot of money. He then pointed out that Richard made less than $20K over the past two days. Not too sure Richard was thrilled to have that info highlighted, but Alex neglected to mention that none of the players knew the Final Jeopardy! answer these past two days.
John found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “The Gilded Age.” He was in the lead with $4,800, $1,200 more than Richard who was second. Surprising us (because he was doing quite well in the category), he only bet $1,800 and he was RIGHT.
Gilded Age advocates of the theory called “social” this -ism applauded the “survival of the fittest.” show
John finished in the lead with $6,600. Richard was next with $3,600 and Scotti was last with $2,800.
Scotti found the first Double Jeopardy Daily Double in “Where’d Ya Get that Title.” She was in second place with $4,400, $3,000 less than John. She bet $2,000 and thought it was Paul Laurence Dunbar which was WRONG.
Lorraine Hansberry’s title “A Raisin in the Sun” comes from a line in the poem “Harlem” by this man. show
Richard found the last Daily Double in “Discovering Japan.” He was in third place with $2,800, but only $1,800 behind John, who was still in the lead but with a lot less than before. He bet $1,200, but had no idea so he was WRONG.
Though he didn’t make it all the way to “Cipango,” he reported it had “gold in the greatest abundance.” show
Richard finished in the lead with $7,600. John was next with $5,800 and Scotti was in third place with $4,800.
Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
WHAT IS PAN AMERICAN WORLD AIRWAYS (PAN AM)?
Pan Am was the largest international air carrier from 1927 until 1991. A cultural icon of the 20th century, Pan Am is the airline that brought the Beatles to America in 1964 on a Boeing 707-321. It has its own website, The Pan Am Historical Foundation where there is plenty of info on the airline’s history as well as an extensive list of Pan Am firsts.
Scotti wrote down Eastern but crossed it out at the last second and scribbled something that looked like it began with P but was deemed illegible. That cost her $2,801 so she finished with $1,999.
John got it right and bet $5,500. He finished with $11,300.
Richard wrote down Caribbean Air. He lost $4,001 so he ended up with $3,599.
So we will finish out the week with a new champ tomorrow — John Baker.
What is the opposite of winning ugly? Winning beautifully?
