Final Jeopardy: 20th Century Presidents (5-16-13)

The Final Jeopardy question (5/16/2013) in the category “20th Century Presidents” was:

These 2 men followed each other consecutively as Vice President & later, in reverse order, as President.

Here we are, down to the nitty gritty — almost. Today is the first of two matches that will determine the $100,000 winner of the 2013 Jeopardy! College Tournament. Jim Coury was the biggest winner in the semi-finals with $32,604; Trevor Walker; was second with $17,199; and Kristen Jolley was third with $7,401.

The runner-up prizes are quite respectable, too. The second runner-up will win $50,000 and the third runner-up $25,000.

Trevor found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Symbols” before the first break. He had a big lead with $5,200, $3,600 more than Jim in second place. He bet $3,000 but evidently never saw or read “Gone with the Wind.” Without even a guess, he was WRONG.

Trevor found the first Double Jeopardy Daily Double in “New in Oxford.” He was in second place with $6,600, $4,200 behind Jim’s lead. He bet $4,000 and this time, he was RIGHT.

NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO ARE RICHARD NIXON AND LYNDON B. JOHNSON?

Richard Nixon was Eisenhower’s VP. He ran for President against JFK in 1960 but lost.

LBJ was JFK’s VP, and became President when JFK was assassinated. LBJ won a second term in 1964 but chose not to seek reelection.

In 1968, Nixon became President after beating LBJ’s VP, Hubert Humphrey.

Trevor had a big question mark and a low bet strategy. He only lost $800 and finished with $11,000.

Kristen picked Gerald Ford and “someone.” She only bet $3,000 so she finished with $10,000.

Jim wrote down Roosevelt & Taft. He bet half his dough and so he ended up with $8,600.

The contestants will bring these amounts into tomorrow’s match. See you then.

I guessed JFK and LBJ. Would that have been acceptable?

There was no mention, I think, on the show..
