Final Jeopardy: Art (4-8-13)

The Final Jeopardy question (4/8/2013) in the category “Art” was:

One of its principal members said, “One morning one of us, having no black, used blue instead, &” this movement “was born.”

2-day champ Salvo Candela is back for another shot at winning some big money. So far, he’s racked up $47,295. Today he is up against these new opponents: Anne Hardiman from Houston, TX; and Mark Richardson, originally from Staunton, VA.

Anne found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “State Quarters.” She was in second place with $2,200, only $200 behind Salvo’s lead, and it was early, before the first break. She bet $600, guessed “Arizona” but that was WRONG.

Mark finished in the lead with $5,400. Salvo was second with $4,600 and Anne was last with $3,400.

Salvo found the first Double Jeopardy Daily Double in “Europe.” He had the lead with $7,000, $3,200 more than Mark in second place. He bet $3,000 and he was RIGHT.

After sweeping through “Misnamed Animals,” Salvo found the last Daily Double in “Synonyms.” He had a mega-lead with $19,600, $15,000 more than Anne in second place. He bet $1,500, and it sounded like he said “chorale.” Whatever it was, it was WRONG.

Salvo finished with another runaway, $20,100 this time. Anne was next with $9,400 and Mark was in third place with $2,200.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS IMPRESSIONISM?

Pierre Auguste Renoir is the artist being quoted, although he did not say it in English with a French accent like Alex Trebek did. He said it in French: “Un matin, l’un de nous manquant de noir, se servit de bleu; l’impressionisme etait né.” See the The Concise Dictionary of Foreign Quotations (Multilingual Edition).

Mark wrote down “Fauvism” which cost him $800. He finished with $1,400.

Anne got it right but didn’t bet anything so she finished with what she started with.

Salvo wrote down “Modernism.” He only bet $1,200 so he still won the game with $18,900. His 3-day total is $66,195.
