Final Jeopardy: Symbolic Sculpture

The Final Jeopardy question (4/3/2012) in the category “Symbolic Sculpture” was:

In 2005 a sculpture of an African elephant was installed outside this country’s embassy in Washington, D.C.

New champ Elisabeth Carrel returned today after winning $24,0000 in yesterday’s game. Her opponents today are: Joey Falco from Santa Monica, CA and Tamara Tatum-Broughton, from Washington, D.C.

Joey found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Good News.” He had $2,800, $800 less than Tamara who was in the lead. He bet $2,000. He thought it was a school for the blind and that was WRONG.

Tamara finished in the lead with $3,800. Joey was next with $1,600. Elisabeth spent the better part of the round in the hole but managed to get out and finish with $200.

Elisabeth found the first Daily Double in Double Jeopardy! in “NY Museums.” She was still in third place but she now had $3,000, $3,200 less than Tamara in the lead. She chose to make it a true Daily Double and she was RIGHT.

WHAT IS CÔTE D’IVOIRE (THE IVORY COAST)?

Do you sometimes have the feeling that they dig up these clues just to provide Alex Trebek with the opportunity to display his linguistic prowess? We know that Alex gave the answer in English first, but actually, in 1985, the Ivorian government requested that the country be known as Côte d’Ivoire in every language, so maybe he should have said it second. For more info on the country, see the Dept. of State’s Côte d’Ivoire travel page.

Joey wrote down “Kenya” and that cost him $2,401 and he ended up with $3,999.

Tamara wrote down “South Africa” and bet $6,001. She finished with $2,199.

Elisabeth already knew she was wrong because she also wrote down “Kenya,” and she knew she lost her $7,601 so she also knew that the winner was Joey.

Joey sure looked a lot taller after the contestants came out on the floor to talk to Alex Trebek. He dwarfed the ladies and even looked like he was a head taller than Trebek, who you may know is 5′ 8″ if you happened to check out his IMDB bio we linked to yesterday.
