Final Jeopardy: Constellations and Myth

The Final Jeopardy question (4/27/2012) in the category “Constellations & Myth” was:

In Greek myth, he became the prey when he was killed by Scorpius; now they’re both in the sky.

Current champ, Jacob Silverman, returned today. His 2-day total is $29,799 and he will either make some more money or get whupped by one of these new players: Kevin Rowe, from Chicago, IL and Marla Goldstein from Brooklyn, NY.

Kevin found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double pretty quick in “President of the Year.” He was in the lead with $1,600. Jacob had $400 and Marla had $200. He bet $1,000 and he was RIGHT.

Marla finished in the lead with $5,400. Kevin was second with $4,800 and Jacob was last with $2,800.

Jacob found the first Double Jeopardy Daily Double in “Spying.” He took over the lead with this category and had $6,800. Marla still had $5,400 and Kevin had $3,200. He bet $3,000 and he was RIGHT.

Normally a verb, in spy jargon it’s a noun meaning acquisition of an electronic message not meant for you. show

Marla found the last Daily Double in “Novelty Song Lyrics.” She had $12,600, $1,600 less than Jacob and $5,000 more than Kevin. She bet $1,500, but did not know so she was WRONG.

Jacob finished in the lead with $14,200, although not a runaway today. Marla was next with $11,100 and Kevin was in third place with $7,600.

Once again, NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS ORION?

“One of the countless legends of Orion has it that Diana loved Orion. Her brother, Apollo, was upset over her affair with a mortal, and contrived to have him bitten fatally by Scorpius. Diana’s efforts to prevent Orion’s death could not overcome her brother’s greater power. (Other versions of the myth feature Juno, upset by Orion’s boasting, sending Scorpius to do the hit job). But evidently Diana had a few powers of her own. At least, she was able to pull enough strings to have Orion and Scorpius placed at opposite ends of the sky. In the evenings, Scorpius is only visible in summer, Orion in winter. As Orion sets in the west, Scorpius rises in the east. Separated by 180° of sky, Orion will be safe throughout eternity, and he need never fear a bite from Scorpius again.” (Star Spangled Banter)

Kevin wrote down “Cancer” and that cost him $3,501. He finished with $4,099.

Marla picked “Apollo.” She lost $8,501, finishing with $2,599.

Jacob also wrote down “Cancer.” He bet $8,001 so he ended up with a measly $6,199, but it was a measly $6,199 that still won the game and made him a 3-day champ with a total of $35,998.

Jacob will return after next week’s Teen Tournament.
