Final Jeopardy: Women’s Firsts

The Final Jeopardy question (4/24/2012) in the category “Women’s First” was:

In 1977 Juanita Kreps, the first woman on the board of the NYSE, became the first woman to head this cabinet dept.

Today’s new champ is Cindy Vanderbur who kicked butt yesterday and won $17,799, Her opponents are Andrea Korte, from Washington, DC and Matt Johnson from Lancaster, PA.

Cindy found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “AFI Life Achievement Award.” She had $5,600, double what Andrea had in second place. She bet $2,500, took a guess with Billy Wilder and that was WRONG.

Cindy finished in the lead with $24,000. Andrea had the same $18,400 she had after that last Double Jeopardy. Likewise Mike still had $6,200, so you know who answered all the rest of the clues.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS THE DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE?

Juanita Kreps was not only the first female Secretary of Commerce, she was also the first economist to hold that position. That would have been really tough if they went for “Economists’ Firsts.” We got that information from an online memorial for Mrs. Kreps who passed away at the age of 89 on July 5, 2010. Interestingly enough, the memorial says her given name was Blair, while wikipedia says it was Clara.

Matt doubled his score and ended with $12,400.

Andrea thought it was the Treasury, so that cost her $5,999. She finished with $12,401. (That extra dollar means an extra thousand for her).

Cindy started making her faces again, making Alex think she was wrong, but she was right and bet $12,801. So her total today was $36,801 and her two day haul is $54,800.
