Final Jeopardy: World Currencies

The Final Jeopardy question (4/20/2012) in the category “World Currencies” was:

1 of the 4 small U.N. member nations that use the Euro as their official currency even though not in the European Union

Two day champ Dan Adkinson is back to defend his title and to hopefully add to his $31,800 winnings. Today’s new opponents are Kerr Houston, from Baltimore, MD. and Amy Drittler from Tazewell, TN.

Dan found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double right away on the second clue in the category “Axis & Allies.” So having only answered one clue, he had $200 and the other contestants had nothing. It wasn’t a waste though because he bet the $1,000 and he was RIGHT.

An ‘axis’ binding these two cities was proclaimed in 1936. show

Dan finished in the lead with $7,800. Kerr was right behind him with $7,200 and Amy was last with $2,400.

Dan found the first Double Jeopardy Daily Double in “The Mid-West” right after Kerr went on a correct answer rampage and took over the lead. Dan had $11,400 at this point, $2,600 less than Kerr. Not one to give up easily, Dan risked $8,000 to get that lead back and some more, and he was RIGHT.

This river passes through Waterloo, Iowa, as well as through the cities named for its Falls & Rapids. show

Amy found the last Daily Double in the category “Biblical Idol.” She was in third place with $2,800 and chose to risk $1,200 of it. Not at all sure she knew, she took a shot with Ba’al and she was WRONG.

Also known as the Lord of the Flies, this god of Ekron was consulted by Ahaziah, King of Israel. show

Dan finished in the lead with $20,600. Kerr was next with $16,400 and Amy was last with $2,400.

With FOUR possible correct answers, you would think all of the players would get Final Jeopardy! right, wouldn’t you?

NONE of them did!

WHAT IS ANDORRA or MONTENEGRO or MONACO or SAN MARINO?

If they were looking for countries that don’t use the Euro, the contestants would have had a much wider field to pick from.

Amy wrote down The Vatican.* She lost her $600 bet and finished with $1,800.

Kerr wrote down Liechtenstein, which uses the Swiss Franc and is not a member of the European Union. That cost him $11,500 and he finished with $4,900.

Dan wrote down Malta, which uses the euro and is a member of the European Union. He bet $15,000 so he still won the game, but only with $5,600! His 3-day total is $37,400.

Wow, that sure was something!

*According to wikipedia, The Vatican does use the euro. And it’s technically not a member of the European Union.  According to another article on wikipedia, it’s a little complicated. In any event, if Amy’s answer was judged correct, it would not have changed the results of today’s game in any way — she still would have been in third place.
