Final Jeopardy: Word Origins

The Final Jeopardy question (4/13/2012) in the category “Word Origins” was:

An exploited part of the law, originally it meant an opening in a castle wall used to look at or shoot at an enemy.

Our 4th new champ this week is Judy Nichols who won $25,300 yesterday. Today she will attempt to defeat these two new players, both from the Golden State: Cat Still from Los Angeles and Peter Allen, from Fresno.

Alex began the show by wishing Judy a Happy Anniversary and then sending a birthday shoutout to his mére, Lucille, who will turn 91 tomorrow.

Judy found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “First Names.” Before that happened she got credit for an answer she gave in ‘E’asy Science. She was in second place with $2,800, $600 less than Cat, who was in the lead. She bet $1,000 but the baptism reference in the clue threw her off. She said “Baptiste” and that was WRONG.

This French name means ‘reborn,’ a reference to Christian baptism. show

Cat finished in the lead with $5,800. Judy was next with $4,000 and Peter was pulling up the rear with $2,200.

WHAT IS A LOOPHOLE?

“Historically, arrowslits were narrow vertical windows from which castle defenders launched arrows from a sheltered position, and were also referred to as “loopholes.” Thus a loophole in a law often contravenes the intent of the law without technically breaking it, much as the small slit window in a castle wall provides the only ready means of gaining entry without breaching or destroying the wall or a gate. ” (wikipedia)

Peter bet $4,201. He finished with $10,001.

Cat only bet $3,401 so she finished with $11,601.

Judy bet $8,000. She finished with $21,200 and won again. Her 2-day total is $46,500. She will return on Monday for a shot at becoming a 3-day champ.
