Final Jeopardy: Musical Instruments (3-9-12)

The Final Jeopardy question (3/9/2012) in the category “Musical Instruments” was:

An entertainer born in 1888 whose original first name was Adolph was one of the best-known players of this instrument.

New champ Jessamine Price came back today to try for another win Jeopardy! These two players came on board to try out their skills: Marion Baumgarten from River Forest, IL, and Galen Benshoof from Seattle, WA.

Marion found the Jeopardy! Daily Double in the category “Cherokee Nation.” She had $7,200 when she found it, but was then awarded $800 for rightfully calling a Honus Wagner card a cigarette card. So now she had $8,000 and chose to risk $2,000 of it and she was RIGHT.

In the 1830s, the Cherokee were expelled from the Southeast and forcibly relocated to what’s now this State. show

Marion finished in the lead with a whopping $11,000. Jessamine was next with $3,200 and Galen was in third place with $2,800.

In Double Jeopardy!, Jessamine caught right up to Marion by nailing the entire “A Very Bright Response” category, but it was Galen who found the first Daily Double in “Senate Majority Leaders.” He had $4,400 at this point. Jessamine had $10,000 and Marion had $10,200. Galen bet $2,600 and he was RIGHT.

In 1996, he left the senate to focus on his run for President. show

Now the contestants were on a much more level playing field. The other Daily Double was left on the board under “Literary Character Rap Sheet” when time ran out after some crazy ups and down like in the “Saturday Night Live” when Galen inadvertently said Lorne Meyers and was declared wrong before he could amend it to Lorne Michaels, although he did get it out and then Marion buzzed in with it. “Galen spoke too quickly,” Alex said. We thought the problem was Alex calling him wrong too quickly.

Nonetheless, Galen ended the round with $15,400, Jessamine was next with $10,800 and incredibly, Marion finished with $9,800, less than she had at the end of the first round.

NONE of the players got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS THE HARP?

On “Harpo’s Place,” his tribute site to his father, Bill Marx says: “Anybody who has seen a Marx Brothers movie knows Harpo is a lunatic… a wild man capable of the craziest things imaginable… and even some things that defy the laws of physics. (In one movie, he pulls a full-grown dog out of his coat; in another, a lit candle burning at both ends.)

But when he sat down to play the harp, Harpo became Arthur. You can see it in his face. He’s got that rapt, hypnotized quality to his expression. These are my favorite moments of Dad’s movie and TV appearances …”

Marion wrote down “the clarinet” and that cost her everything but a dollar.

Jessamine wrote down “the cello” but only bet $799, so she finished with $10,001.

Galen wrote down “the trumpet.” He bet $6,201 and finished with $9,199.

This time, it was brilliant betting that saved the day for Jessamine! Her two day total is $19,002.
