Final Jeopardy: Civilizations (3-5-12)

The Final Jeopardy question (3/5/2012) in the category “Civilizations” was:

Starting in the 300s BC, Hellenistic civilization was spread from this land where a new country was declared in 1991.

After winning $29,300 on Friday, new champion David Gard returned today to take on these two contestants: Tony Grey from Los Angeles, CA; and Nina Stanton from Louisville, KY.

David found the Jeopardy! Daily Double (a video) in the category “Where Am I.” He had $2,600, $800 less than Nina who was in the lead. He bet $1,400, but didn’t know so he was WRONG.

Nina finished in the lead with $3,400. David was second with $2,200 and Tony was in third place with $1,600 at the end of the round.

Nina found the first Daily Double in Double Jeopardy in “New to the OED.” She was now in the lead with $8,200, $400 less than David. She chose to bet $3,000 and, unable to offer a guess, was WRONG.

Tony got the last Daily Double in the category “Essays.” We like it when each contestant gets a shot at a Daily Double. He was in second place with $6,000, $3,000 less than the leader, who was now David. He bet $3,000, and responded “What is ‘On Civil Disobedience,” which was WRONG. (Henry David Thoreau wrote that one).

David wound up with more ups than downs and finished in the lead with $14,200. Although they were both good players, Tony and Nina had more downs than ups in Double Jeopardy! They ended up with $4,600 and $3,600 respectively and no chance to catch David.

Not even one close Daily Double today. We thought all of the players would nail Final Jeopardy! but only TWO were right.

WHAT IS MACEDONIA?

“Macedonia, officially the Republic of Macedonia, is a country located in the central Balkan peninsula in Southeast Europe. It is one of the successor states of the former Yugoslavia, from which it declared independence in 1991. It became a member of the United Nations in 1993 but, as a result of a dispute with Greece over its name, it was admitted under the provisional reference of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, sometimes abbreviated as FYROM.” (wikipedia)

Nina got it and bet $3,595. She finished with $7,195.

Tony also got it. He bet $3,000 and finished with $7,600.

David bet $4,900 and wrote down Greece. He still won the game with $9,300 and his 2-day total is $38,600.
