Final Jeopardy: Book Villains (3-2-12)

The Final Jeopardy question (3/2/2012) in the category “Book Villains” was:

The first time we meet this man in a 1981 novel, he’s in his cell holding “Le Grand Dictionnaire de Cuisine”.

Two-day champion Patrick Morrison returned today to try to defeat the last two newbies of the week: Annette Todd from Riverside, CA; and David Gard from Jamaica Plain, MA., who have their work cut out for them if they hope to defeat him. Yes, we are rooting for Patrick and would love to see him come back in the next Tournament of Champions.

As soon as he got a correct clue in “Annual Events,” David dove right into “Astronomy” and was doing great when he found the Jeopardy! Daily Double under the third clue. He had $1,000 and we would have been disappointed if he didn’t make it a true Daily Double. He didn’t disappoint us and he was RIGHT.

David finished in the lead with $6,600. Patrick was close behind with $6,000 and Annette had $3,000 at the end of the round.

David found the first Daily Double in Double Jeopardy in “Antonymic Pairs.” He had $9,800 when he found it but was then awarded a correct response for OBE (Officer of the British Empire), so he had $11,400, a $3,800 lead over Patrick. He chose to bet $2,600 and he was RIGHT, much to the amazement of Alex. We knew he’d figure it out.

Patrick got the last Daily Double in the category “The Post Man’s Here.” He just got in the lead with $14,800, $800 more than David and was doing quite well in this category, but he was not feeling reckless. He bet $2,200, a good thing, because he did not know it. He took a shot with Denver but that was WRONG.

David finished in the lead with $16,000. Patrick had $14,600 and Annette had $3,000.

Two correct Daily Doubles today and, as expected, all the players knew the right Final Jeopardy! answer, but one left something important off.

WHO IS HANNIBAL LECTER?

“Lying on a cot in his cell with Alexandre Dumas’s Grand Dictionnaire de cuisine open on his chest, Hannibal “The Cannibal” Lecter makes his debut in this legendary horror novel, which is even better than its sequel, The Silence of the Lambs. As in Silence, the pulse-pounding suspense plot involves a hypersensitive FBI sleuth who consults psycho psychiatrist Lecter for clues to catching a killer on the loose.”

Annette wrote down “Hanibal” but couldn’t remember his last name. It was judged unacceptable so she lost her $2,998 bet and wound up with $2.

Patrick got it and bet $8,000, correctly surmising that David would bet enough to shut him out if he was right, so he finished with $22,600.

David also got it and made that $13,300 shut out bet so he won the game with $29,300.

We haven’t been keeping track of the big winners since the last Tournament of Champions, but here are the ones we remember:

Jason Keller $213,900 (9 days)
Dave Leach: $98,054 (6 days)
Dan McShane $62,001 (4 days)

So maybe Patrick’s 3-day total of $80,701 will still get him in the Tournament of Champions and if David Gard continues to play as strongly as he did today, we may see him too … or instead!
