Final Jeopardy: U.S. Government (2-8-13)

The Final Jeopardy question (2/8/2013) in the category “U.S. Government” was:

Recently in the news, this agency traces its origins to an 1803 Act helping Portsmouth, N.H. after a fire.

Today in the last match of the semi-finals, two semi-finalists, Leonard Cooper, a senior, and Nilai Sarda, a freshman, compete against each other and Wild Card winner Emily Greenberg, a senior.

Since there was no winner in yesterday’s game, the results of today’s game will determine who makes the finals, but it’s doubtful that these contestants will bet it all since they were obviously aware of what happened. Alex Trebek brought it up before the match began.

Nilai found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “African Americans.” He was in the lead with $5,400, $2,200 more than Leonard in second place. He bet $2,000 and he was RIGHT.

Nilai finished in the lead with $9,400. Leonard was second with $6,000 and Emily was last with $1,200.

Emily found the first Double Jeopardy Daily Double while righteously cruising through the category “Books & Authors.” She now had $3,600, $5,800 less than Nilai’s lead. She bet $2,000 and she was RIGHT.

John Green riffed on a line from “Julius Caesar” for the title of this novel about 2 teens with cancer who fall in love. show

Nilai found the last Daily Double in “Let’s Go to a Museum.” He was now in second place with $14,200, $4,200 less than Emily’s lead. He bet $2,000, and he was RIGHT.

Emily finished in the lead with $18,400. Nilai was next with $16,200 and Leonard was in third place with $15,200.

ALL of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! RIGHT but, just as we figured, none of them bet all their money. And none of them left themselves with $100 or less, effectively shutting Irene Vasquez out of the finals.

WHAT IS FEMA?

“The Federal Emergency Management Agency coordinates the federal government’s role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror. FEMA can trace its beginnings to the Congressional Act of 1803. This act, generally considered the first piece of disaster legislation, provided assistance to a New Hampshire town following an extensive fire….” (About FEMA)

Leonard bet $15,000. He finished with $30,200.

Nilai bet $14,200, finishing with $30,400.

Emily only bet $6,000 so she ended up with $24,400.

And that means that Nilai won the game.

Leonard had the most money of the three eligible semi-finalists — Emily and Irene Vasquez ($100).

So Nilai Sarda and Leonard Cooper will join Barrett Block in the 2-part final that begins on Monday. Nilai will find himself competing against two seniors once again, but we doubt that will faze him in the least — Nilai’s cool like that.
