Final Jeopardy: The New Testament (2-22-12)

The Final Jeopardy question (2/22/2012) in the category “The New Testament” was:

In Chapter 1 of the Acts of the Apostles, Matthias is chosen to replace him.

We begin the 2012 Teachers Tournament Semi-Finals today with one semi-finalist: Justin Hofstetter; and two Wild Card winners Kathryn Wendling and Lisa Johnston. Justin had the highest semi-final score ($26,689) and Kathryn had the highest Wild Card score ($19,200), if you like to keep track of these things — and we do.

Justin was quite a powerhouse yesterday in spite of losing all his dough in the Jeopardy! round on a true Daily Double gone awry. By the first commercial break, he was doing his thing again and had an impressive $6,000.

But it was Lisa who got the Jeopardy! Daily Double in the category “Or Go Home.” It was the last clue on the board and she had $3,800, $3,600 less than Justin. She bet $1,800 and was WRONG. She had the right president, but that was not what the clue asked for.

Justin was in the lead with $7,400. Lisa now had $2,000 and Kathryn also had $2,000 after losing some money for adding an ‘s’ to Trump Tower.

In Double Jeopardy, Kathryn found the first Daily Double pretty quick (2nd clue) in “February is Black History Month.” She made it a true Daily Double in an effort to catch up with Justin. She didn’t know and took a guess with “Amistad” but that was WRONG so she lost her whole $2,400.

Lisa got the last Daily Double in the category “U.S. Place Names.” She now had $8,000, $10,200 less than Justin. She bet $3,000 and she was RIGHT, and even rolled her eyes a little, no doubt wishing she had bet more.

Reading her mind, Alex commented: “You shoulda bet more, Lisa.” She now was in second place with $11,000. Justin had $18,200 and Kathryn was in last place with $400.

Only one correct Daily Double today but ALL three contestants got this easy Final Jeopardy right.

WHO IS JUDAS?

Do you think this could have been a bit more challenging if they had asked for the names of one of the two apostles chosen to replace Judas? We do, but since they didn’t consult us … on with the recap (and this info would be the same anyhow):

Chapter 1 of Acts tells the story of what happened to Judas, giving a different account of his demise than the gospel of Matthew (27:3-8). Peter says that it is written in the Psalms that Judas must be replaced with one who was with them the entire time Christ was alive.

“23 So they nominated two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias.
24 Then they prayed, “Lord, you know everyone’s heart. Show us which of these two you have chosen
25 to take over this apostolic ministry, which Judas left to go where he belongs.”
26 Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles.”

Kathryn bet $219 and finished with $619.

Lisa bet $10,500 and finished with $21,500.

Justin bet $4,000, finishing with $22,200. He made the Sign of the Cross, thanking the Lord for his spot in the finals and a guaranteed $25,000.
