Final Jeopardy: Asian Borders (2-21-12)

The Final Jeopardy question (2/21/2012) in the category “Asian Borders” was:

In 1893 the British established the Durand Line, now the boundary, much in the news since 2001, between these 2 countries.

Today we will get our last semi-finalist in the 2012 Teachers Tournament and it will be one of these educators: Leslie Decker of Austin, TX., Justin Hofstetter of Kansas City, MO. or Pian Wong of New York, NY.

Justin got the Jeopardy! Daily Double in the category “Acts of Congress” before the first commercial break. He was in the lead with $3,000, $2,000 more than Pian and $2,600 more than Leslie. He made it a true Daily Double, because he wanted to say that for 21 years! Sadly, he was WRONG because he didn’t know and said “What is the I Just Lost $3,000 Act.” Nice sense of humor about it anyhow.

Britain couldn’t afford to pay cash for war materials much longer, so FDR proposed this alliterative act in December 1940. show

Despite that downer, Justin was in a tie with Pian by the commercial break at $1,800. By the end of the round, Pian was in first place with $4,600, Justin had $3,600 and Leslie had $1,600 and the honor of going first in the next round.

In Double Jeopardy, Justin found the first Daily Double in “War: Who Ya Got?” He now had a big lead with $12,400, $7,600 more than Pian, his closest competition. We knew he wasn’t going the true Daily Double route this time and he bet $4,000. As luck would have it, this time he was RIGHT.

Justin got the last Daily Double, too. The category was “A Hell of a Quote.” He now had $17,600, a hell of a runaway. He bet $6,000 and he was RIGHT.

“All hell broke loose” comes from this 17th century epic poem.” show

Justin ended the round with $28,400. Pian had $11,800 and Leslie had $6,400.

Two correct Daily Doubles today, but only ONE contestant had the right answer in Final Jeopardy.

WHAT ARE AFGHANISTAN AND PAKISTAN?

The 7-article Durand Line Agreement was made on November 12, 1893 and signed by Amir Abdur Rahman Khan, Afghanistan’s ruler from 1880 to 1901, and British diplomat, Sir Henry Mortimer Durand, on behalf of the British Empire.

Leslie got it right and bet everything but a dollar, so she finished with $12,799 and won herself a Wild Card spot.

Pian wrote down some weird stuff and bet $10,112. She ended up with $1,688.

Justin picked India and Pakistan. He only bet $1,711 and finished with $26,689, the highest score of all semi-finalists.

The semi-finalists and their scores are:
Justin Hofstetter $26,689
Mary Ann Stanley $22,300
Catherine Whitten $21,173
Patrick Quinn $20,001
Brooks Humphreys $13,700

The Wild Card winners and their scores are:
