Final Jeopardy: The New 7 Wonders of the World (2-19-13)

The Final Jeopardy question (2/19/2013) in the category “The New 7 Wonders of the World” was:

On the new list chosen in 2007, this wonder designed by Heitor da Silva Costa is the only statue.

We’re at the last quarter-final match of the 2013 Tournament of Champions. Competing today are: Ashok Poozhikunnell, a 4x champ ($69,002); Dave Leach, a 6x champ ($98,054); and Patrick Quinn, winner of the 2012 Teachers Tournament ($100,000).

Patrick found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “The Future,” videos with the clues read by former Vice-President, Al Gore. Patrick was in the lead with $3,200, $400 less than Ashok in second place. He bet $1,000 and he was RIGHT.

Dave finished in the lead with $12,600. Ashok was right behind him with $12,400 and Patrick was in third place with $5,000.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right. How shocking. We thought the Ancient and New Wonders of the World would be on every contestant’s study list, plus … well, you’ll see if you already didn’t.

WHAT IS CHRIST THE REDEEMER?

“Christ the Redeemer (Portuguese: Cristo Redentor, standard) is a statue of Jesus Christ in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; considered the largest Art Deco statue in the world and the 5th largest statue of Jesus in the world. ” (wikipedia)

Patrick wrote down “What is the Christ in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.” That was deemed unacceptable so he lost $4,011. He finished with $989. Don’t look at us, we would have accepted it.

Ashok thought it was the statue of Mary in Brazil. On this one, we can see how it wasn’t specific enough even if the clue had called for the patroness of Brazil, Our Lady of Aparecida. Ashok only bet $400 so he finished with $12,000.

Dave got it right. He bet $2,500 so he ended up with $15,100 and goes straight to the semi-finals.

Here are all  the Semi-Finalists in order of winnings:
Jason Keller – $28,200
Keither Whitener – $26,601
Colby Burnett – $16,400
Dave Leach – $15,100
Paul Nelson – $15,000

Our Wild Card list remains the same:
Dan McShane: $20,000
Kristin Morgan: $17,500
Jason Shore: $14,000
Stephanie Jass: $13,000

it would not have made a difference for patrick. he was already out of wild card range. but sometimes j accepts much more dubious answers(questions). if you are a stickler then at least be consistent,no??
