Final Jeopardy: Countries of the World (2-14-12)

The Final Jeopardy question (2/14/2012) in the category “Countries of the World” was:

The 14 countries that border China run alphabetically from this to Vietnam.

At last, the final match of the 2012 College Championship tournament has arrived and today, all of these young’uns will go home a considerably richer college student, but only one will take home $100,000: Zack Terrill (Vanderbilt), Monica Thieu (Univ. of North Texas) and Sarah Bart (Goucher).

Just like yesterday, Sarah got the first Daily Double in the Jeopardy! round. This was in the category “A Few Things Happened in 1865.” She was in a tie with Zack for the lead with $1,400. Without blinking an eye and with a wave of her hand, she made it a true Daily Double and she was RIGHT.

But she lost all that and went all the way back down to finish the round in second place with $1,400, thanks to some bad guessing. Monica did her share of bad guessing as well and wound up in third place with $600. Zack was in the lead with $4,800.

In Double Jeopardy, Monica found the first Daily Double in “Classical Music.” At this point, she was in a tie with Sarah. They each had $2,600, $1,400 less than Zack who had lost some money due to — yes indeed, bad guessing. She wagered $1,000 and answered “Jeux or Games,” which was WRONG.

Sarah snagged the last Daily Double in “Government and Politics.” She was now in second place with $5,400, $2,200 less than Zack who was in the lead. She bet $2,000 and couldn’t come up with even a bad guess so she was WRONG.

Zack finished in the lead with $8,800. Monica was in second place with $5,200 and Sarah was last with $4,600.

Again we had two out of three correct Daily Doubles today,  and although we truly believed all the players would get this one, only TWO got Final Jeopardy right.

WHAT IS AFGHANISTAN?

Whether you call it Burma or Myanmar, the answer alphabetically is still Afghanistan. Here are all 14 countries that border China.

1. Afghanistan
2. Bhutan
3. India
4. Kazakhstan
5. Kyrgyzstan
6. Laos
7. Mongolia
8. Myanmar (Burma)
9. Nepal
10. North Korea
11. Pakistan
12. Russia
13. Tajikistan
14. Vietnam

Incidentally, the name of the mountain pass between Afghanistan and China could be another Final Jeopardy! question all by itself.

Sarah got it and bet every penny so she ended up with $9,200 to add to her $9,800 from yesterday. Her final score: $19,000.

Monica also was correct. She bet $3,000. She now had $8,200 to add to yesterday’s score of $18,000. Her final score: $26,200.

Zack wrote down “Bhutan.” He bet everything he had today, so he finished with nothing to add to yesterday’s $8,000 winnings. That was his final score.

Sarah won $50,000 and Zack won $25,000. Monica won the $100,000 grand prize and a trophy plus a hug from Alex Trebek.

Tune in tomorrow for yet another tournament, when teachers will square off for another grand prize of $100,000.
