Final Jeopardy: NFL (12-21-11)

The Final Jeopardy question (12/21/2011) in the category “NFL” was:

This team that joined the NFL in the mid-1970s is the only one whose name starts with the same 3 letters as its city’s name

Jason Keller returned today after becoming the first 3-day champion in about a month. In order to become a 4-day champion he will have to beat: Janemarie Cloutier of Pennsylvania and Drew Tompkins of Alabama.

Jason found the Jeopardy round Daily Double before the first commercial break in  “Capital Fun Fests.” He only had $800 but bet the $1,000 allowance. Pretty easy, if you ask us. He got it RIGHT.

This city has been hosting its Golden North Salmon Derby since 1947. Before it was officially a state capital. show

Jason finished the round in first place with $8,600. Janemarie was within striking distance with $6,000 and Drew was last with $1,600.

Jason pulled ahead with the “Physical Science” category. He had $17,200, an impossible to catch lead, by the time Janemarie found the first Double Jeopardy Daily Double in “Elf-Help”. She had $7,200 and chose to bet $4,000. Janemarie’s smile as the clue was read showed she knows her Grimm fairy tales. “Right you are,” Alex said, sounding so surprised. LOL. She’s a school librarian, Alex.

In a Grimm tale, elves made these for a merchant until his wife made them clothes. They never came back. show

Janemarie also got the second Daily Double in “Classic Cinema:” With $13,200, Janemarie said: “Let’s try $5,000 again” (but she only bet $4,000 the other time – we rechecked). She knows her classic movies, too.

Originally planned for Charles Laughton & Elsa Lanchester in the 1930s, it was later made with Bogart & Hepburn. show

And to punctuate it, Janemarie got the $2,000 clue in the same category and finished in the lead with $20,200. Time ran out and the last clue was left unturned. Jason was right behind her with $19,800 and Drew had $6,800 going into Final Jeopardy.

Only ONE contestant got the Final Jeopardy answer, the one we figured would.

WHO ARE THE SEATTLE SEAHAWKS?

“On March 5, 1975, John Thompson, former Executive Director of the NFL Management Council and a former Washington Husky executive, was hired as the general manager of the currently unnamed team. The name Seattle Seahawks (‘Seahawk’ another name for osprey) was selected on June 17, 1975 after a public naming contest which drew more than 20,000 entries and over 1,700 different names. The name ‘Seahawks’ was submitted by Mary Hoolahan of Seattle, WA.” (wikipedia)

Drew had no clue but bet nothing so he remained at $6,800.

Jason, as we expected, got it right. His $5,200 bet brought him up to $25,000.

Janemarie made that big giant bet that we thought would come from Jason, but she did not know the answer. Her $19,401 bet left her in third place with $799.

We can’t remember the last time we saw a 4-day champion, but we’ve got one now! Congrats to Jason on his 4-day total of $94,800. Forgive us if we say we thought that smile when the NFL category was revealed meant you would make a bigger bet.

Shoutout to our favorite football fan, The Manbat, who got it quicker than Jason.
