Final Jeopardy: American Women (11-23-11)

The Final Jeopardy question (11/23/2011) in the category “American Women” was:

Geraldine Doyle, who in 1942 took a job at a Michigan metal factory, helped inspire the look and job of this iconic character.

Our two-day champ, Francis Lansagnan, was back today to try for a third victory, after winning a total of $40,000. Katherine Philbin, from New Hampshire, and Steven Maio, from Connecticut, were on hand to attempt to take the title away.

Alex said that yesterday, they threw the 3 contestants “a curve on the outside corner, and they weren’t able to catch up with it. All three missed it and as a result, Francis wound up with the most money …”  Well, that’s not true. All 3 contestants gave the same answer and Francis would have won the game whether the answer was right or wrong.

In the Jeopardy! round, Francis got the Daily Double in the category “Characters in Movies.” Francis had $7,000 and bet $3,000 and he was RIGHT.

Francis finished the round with $12,200, a stellar lead over Steven, who had $3,000, and Katherine with $1,600.

Katherine got the first Daily Double in Double Jeopardy in “Asia.” She had $5,600 and chose to risk $4,000 of it. She got it right, jumping right into second place.

“The only U.S. mint ever outside the continental U.S. was opened in 1920 in this Asian country, then a U.S. colony.” show

Steven got the second Daily Double in “Characters in James Fenimore Cooper.” He bet $6,000 of the $8,400 he had and he was RIGHT. Oh, boy– how easy was that one! Now Steven was in second place.

“Fittingly, the title character of this 1841 novel dines on venison in Chapter 1.”show

Aside: Much to the surprise of Francis, they didn’t even have Uncas in this category (or Chingachcook, for that matter).

The second round was a bit tighter than the first round. Francis had the lead going into Final Jeopardy with $23,400. Steven was next with $19,200 and Katherine was last with $12,000. Her score was bumped up to $12,800 right before Final Jeopardy when a meat recall answer she gave was deemed acceptable. According to Alex, she said “ground beef,” but she actually said “hamburger.” Francis said “beef.”

All three contestants finished writing their Final Jeopardy answer before the music ended and ALL three got it right today.

“WHO IS ROSIE THE RIVETER”

How nice! They have the lyrics to the Rosie song right in the youtube and we don’t have to type them. Geraldine Hoff Doyle (1924-2010) was the real-life model for the Rosie the Riveter “We Can Do It” posters, although she didn’t even know it until 1984. wikipedia

Katherine bet $12,795, bringing her score to $25,595.

Steven bet $19,000 finishing with $38,200.

Francis bet $15,001, winning the game with $38,401.

We don’t even remember the last time we’ve seen the likes of these high totals from all 3 contestants. Francis now has a 3-day total of $78,401, so once again, we say– Go Francis!

A very happy Turkey Day to everyone who is celebrating Thanksgiving.
