Final Jeopardy: Literary Locales (10-9-13)

The Final Jeopardy question (10/9/2013) in the category “Literary Locales” was:

The creator of this title place said its name came from the letters labeling the last drawer of his file cabinet.

New champ, Jason Idalski won $25,599 yesterday. Today he is up against these two players: Amanda Graves, from Whitinsville, MA; and Theresa Warner, originally from Alton, MO.

Theresa found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “The State Dept. Suggest You Stay Home.” She was in the lead with $3,000, $200 ahead of Jason and Amanda, who were tied in second place. She made it a true Daily Double and thought it was Israel, but that was WRONG.

Hezbollah’s “strong presence” and “shelling…from Syria” are reasons to avoid this county. show

Amanda finished in the lead with $4,400. Jason was second with $3,400 and Theresa was last with $1,000.

Amanda found the first Double Jeopardy Daily Double in “Irish Literature.” She was in the lead with $7,200, $600 ahead of Jason and Theresa, tied in second place. She bet $2,800 and she was RIGHT.

“The Boarding House” and “The Sisters’ are 2 of the 15 stories appearing in this 1914 James Joyce collection. show

Jason found the last Daily Double in “Business.” He was in second place all by himself with $7,400, $2,600 behind Amanda’s lead. He bet $7,000 and he was RIGHT.

If it used the founder’s daughter given name, this restaurant chain would be called Melinda’s. show

Jason finished in the lead with $15,200. Amanda was next with $10,000 and Theresa was in third place with $8,600.

NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS OZ?

Snopes.com says that, in a 1903 press release, L. Frank Baum said: “I have a little cabinet letter file on my desk that is just in front of me. I was thinking and wondering about a title for the story, and had settled on the “Wizard” as part of it. My gaze was caught by the gilt letters on the three drawers of the cabinet. The first was A-G; the next drawer was labeled H-N; and on the last were the letters O-Z. And “Oz” it at once became.”

Theresa wrote down “Xanadu.” That cost her $1,801 and she finished with $6,799.

Amanda had the same answer. She lost her $7,201 bet and wound up with $2,799.

Jason had the same thing as well, but starting with a Z instead of an X. He lost $4,801. The ladies did a great job giving Jason a run for the money at different times, but Jason finished with $10,399 and remained champ. His 2-day total is $35,998.

Random Note: “Weird Top 40 Hits” was a toughie for the contestants. Alex seemed quite surprised that they didn’t know the artists behind “I’m Henry the Eighth, I Am”; and “King of the Road” singer, Roger Miller. The Country Hall of Famer once said that “You Can’t Roller Skate in a Buffalo Herd” was his personal favorite out of the many songs he penned.

Terrible, terrible Final Jeopardy question last night (10/9/13). It was awful. You could plain see the look of confusion and frustration on the contestant’s faces (none of whom correctly answered this idiotic question). What a joke.
