Final Jeopardy: Internet Firsts (10-30-13)

The Final Jeopardy question (10/13/2013) in the category “Internet Firsts” was:

A broken laser pointer for $14.83 in 1995 holds this distinction.

New champ Sean Kram won $28,401 yesterday. Today he defends for the first time and his opponents are: Neal Shah, from Atlanta, Ga; and Jennifer Spirko, from Maryville, TN.

Sean found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “A Passage to Indiana” before the first break. He was in second place with $1,400, $1,800 behind Jennifer’s lead. He made it a true Daily Double and came up with Evansville, but that was WRONG.

Jennifer finished in the lead with $7,800. Neal was second with $3,800 and Sean was last with $2,800.

Neal found the first Daily Double in “The Law.” He was in second place with $11,000, $2,800 behind Jennifer’s lead. Neal, who is a lawyer, only bet $3,000. He didn’t seem to have any idea, though, and took a guess with preponderance. That was WRONG.

Neal found the last Daily Double in “Culture Around the World.” In second place with $10,000, he now had $3,800 less than Jennifer’s lead. He bet $2,000 and he was RIGHT.

Jennifer finished in the lead with $13,400. Neal was next with $10,000 and Sean was in third place with $7,600.

ALL of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS THE FIRST EBAY ITEM SOLD?

According to Mashable.com, the broken laser pointer was the first item ever listed on eBay when it first was launched by Pierre Omidyar as “AuctionWeb.”

“On Labor Day weekend in 1995, computer programmer Omidyar wrote the code for what he called
an “experiment.” He wanted to know what would happen if everyone in the world had access to a single global marketplace. To test his idea, he came up with an auction website, where he listed a broken laser pointer that he was going to throw away. In the end, a collector bought it for $14.83.”

Sean bet $7,590. He finished with $15,190.

Neal bet $10,000, finishing with $20,000.

Jennifer bet $6,601 so she won the game with $20,001 and we have our 3rd new champ this week.

It’s been a while since a TOC update, hasn’t it? Maybe Jennifer will break that spell.
