Final Jeopardy: Inventors (10-28-11)

The Final Jeopardy question (10/28/2011), in the category Inventors was:

“In 1832 this Scot obtained a patent for a process that made silk, paper and other substances impervious to water and air/”

Sunny Stalter of Alabama returned today to try to win the last game of the week. John Jordan from Colorado and Helaine Greenfeld from Maryland were on hand to try to do the same thing.

The Jeopardy round was no great shakes and Sunny spent most of it in the hole. John had a decent lead until he got the Daily Double in “The 1600s”: “After hoarding food rations, he & his son were kept at bay, literally, by mutineers who set them adrift in 1611.” John bet $2,400 of his $3,600 and ended up with $1,200.

His luck continued to decline and so did Helaine’s. Sunny’s rose so by the end of the round she was in the lead with $2,400. John had a mere $600 and Helaine had zero.

The first Daily Double (in The Statute of Liberty) in Double Jeopardy went to John who now had $2,200. Undaunted by his prior failure, he chose to make it a true Daily Double” The Statue’s full proper title is “Liberty” doing this to “the World.” He had to kiss his $2,200 goodbye.

Helaine got the second Daily Double (in Library): “Robert Frost & Daniel Webster collections are housed at a special collections library at this Ivy League school“. She lost $3,500. They left the entire Russian Composers category for last and the timer ran out after only two clues.

Sunny did well in the Problems category so she had a significant lead of $8,000 going into Final Jeopardy. John had $4,400 and Helaine was last with $2,900.

From their facial expressions, it appeared as though Helaine was the only one who thought she knew the answer.

“WHO IS (CHARLES) MACINTOSH”

Scottish chemist Charles Macintosh developed the first waterproof material and patented the process in 1823. The Mackintosh raincoat was named after him, even though they spelled his name wrong.

Helaine did indeed get it right and her $2,899 bet brought her up to $5,799.

John answered Carnegie and bet it all, so he ended up with zero.

Sunny wrote down Tesla (who, by the way, was Serbian) but only bet $1,000, so she won with $7,000. Her two day total was $36,200.

And so ends another fun week of Jeopardy! Next week beginning on Wednesday, November 2nd, 15 Top Jeopardy Winners will return to participate in the exciting Tournament of Champions.
