Final Jeopardy: Foreign Currency (10-23-13)

The Final Jeopardy question (10/23/2013) in the category “Foreign Currency” was:

Iran’s 50,000 rial note includes an international symbol for one of these, featuring 3-well-defined orbits.

Current champ Bill Tolany racked up another win yesterday, and he now has a 2-day total of $26,500. He also has two new players to contend with: Emily Wood, from Waltham, MA; and Nina Emkin, from Los Angeles, CA.

Bill found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “21.” He was in the lead with $5,400, $3,600 ahead of Emily in second place. Despite his bad luck with big bets yesterday, and without any goading from Alex Trebek, he bet $5,000. He took a guess with Pius but that was WRONG.

Emily finished in the lead with $5,600. Bill was second with $3,000 and Nina was last with $1,000.

Bill found the first Double Jeopardy Daily Double in “Point ‘A’ to Point ‘B’.” He was in second place with $3,800, $3,400 less than Emily’s lead. “You have a little more than 50% of Emily’s total, and that’s all I’m saying,” Alex chimed in, to the amusement of the audience. Bill again went big with a $3,600 bet, but couldn’t figure it out. He at least got big laughs when he said “Annapolis and Bannapolis,” but that was WRONG. (Ironically, Bill is from the right ‘A’ city!)

It’s about a 30-hour drive between these 2 rhyming state capitals. show

Bill also found the last Double Jeopardy Daily Double in “Classical Literature.” He was in the lead with $11,800, $3,000 ahead of Emily in second place. “I say nothing,” Alex said. Bill bet $200 this time around and he was RIGHT.

Bill finished in the lead with $12,000. Emily was next with $8,800 and Nina was in third place with $3,800.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS AN ATOM?

The 50,000 rial note was issued by Iran on March 12, 2007. Banknote News has images of the front and back, showing a portrait of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini on the front. On the back is a map of the Persian Gulf with electrons orbiting an atom, and a legend from Prophet Mohammed: “If the science exists in this constellation, men from Persia will reach it.” On the date of issuance, it was the equivalent of $5.40 USD.

Nina wrote down “a solar system.” She lost $1,200 and finished with $2,600.

Emily only got down a “unive.” She lost $8,700, finishing with $100.

Bill got it right, adding $5,700 to win his third game with $17,700. His 3-day total is $44,200.

That funny Daily Double!

there you go. here in hawaii you hear hardly anything other than “bostn”. the second vowel is completely disregarded….on the other hand dean martin’s “houstAn”…..that was his rendition..:)

@john and melissa – not to be contrary, but when you are going by pronunciation, I think a lot of people say bos-tin or bos-ten.

I think it’s a perfectly acceptable rhyming pair for a poem. In a song, it’s excellent, even with a Boston accent. :-)

I just listened to it again, and we all know how meticulous Trebek is when it comes to pronunciation. He said bos-tin. (just posted a clip)

i agree. houston and boston would be closer, although not a perfect rhyme either. but at least they have the same ending….or washington and boston, or….
sometimes clues DO sound a little far fetched.if you can’t come up with a good one, skip it. god knows they have enough writers on the show.

In the first round in the category “All In” ($1,000 clue) — If you had raided this object, you might have found a pot of manna, Aaron’s rod & the 2 stone tablets of Moses.

1.The atom symbol looked more like ovals and not circles. 2. What were the items to which the answer was “The ark of the covenant”? Thank you for such a wonderful show.
