Final Jeopardy: World Capitals (10-11-13)

The Final Jeopardy question (10/11/2013) in the category “World Capitals” was:

It’s the capital city of the only country that borders both the Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea.

Yesterday, William Bernhardt became the new Jeopardy! champ, winning $20,801 in the process. Today he takes on these two players: Greg Buzzard, from Warrensburg, MO; and Julie Huffman, from Oxnard, CA.

William found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “___ing ___” before the first break. He was in second place with $1,000, $200 less than Julie in second place. He made it a true Daily Double and he was RIGHT.

William finished in the lead with $4,400. Greg was second with $3,400 and Julie was right behind him with $3,200.

Greg found the first Double Jeopardy Daily Double in “Sailing the 3 Cs.” He was in the lead with $9,800, $600 ahead of William in second place. He bet $2,000 and came up with “moving on.” That was WRONG, which Greg surely knew since it didn’t even have one C!

It’s the last of the “5 stages of grief.” show

Julie found the last Daily Double in “Our Founding Fathers.” In third place with $2,400, she was $7,400 behind Greg’s lead. She bet $1,000 and thought it was George Washington. That was WRONG.

On March 23, 1775 he told the House of Burgesses that “The war is inevitable– and let it come!” show

Greg finished in the lead with $13,000. William was next with $11,600 and Julie was in third place with $6,200.

ALL of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS ANKARA?

“Turkey, officially the Republic of Turkey, is a contiguous transcontinental country, located mostly on Anatolia in Western Asia and on East Thrace in Southeastern Europe. Turkey is bordered by eight countries: Bulgaria to the northwest; Greece to the west; Georgia to the northeast; Armenia, Iran and the Azerbaijani exclave of Nakhchivan to the east; and Iraq and Syria to the southeast. The Mediterranean Sea is to the south; the Aegean Sea is to the west; and the Black Sea is to the north. The Sea of Marmara, the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles (which together form the Turkish Straits) demarcate the boundary between Thrace and Anatolia; they also separate Europe and Asia.” (wikipedia)

Julie was very surprised that she was right. She added $3,000 to finish with $9,200.

William only bet $1,401. He finished with $13,001.

Greg bet $11,000 so he finished with $24,000 and became the new Jeopardy! champ.

Weird but true: If you watched this week’s Hometown Howdies, you would have known Greg won the game before it started. In the video, he refers to himself as a “returning champion.” That clip must have been meant for next week’s Howdies!
