Final Jeopardy: Rivers (1-11-13)

The Final Jeopardy question (1/11/2013) in the category “Rivers” was:

It’s the world’s longest river whose outflow is into an entirely inland body of water.

Today, we have our first co-champions of the year (despite yesterday’s debate): Kristin Morgan has a 2-day total of $13,499, and Parker East has a 1-day total of $6,799. Today they will compete against one new player: Frances Way, from Fort Collins, CO.

Parker found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Bio Picks.” He was in last place with $2,600, $1,800 less than Frances, in the lead. He made it a true Daily Double and he was RIGHT.

Parker finished in the lead with $5,400. Kristin was second with $4,600 and Frances was last with $4,400.

Kristin found the first Double Jeopardy Daily Double, a video, in “Into the Shark Tank.” She had the lead with $7,800, $200 more than Frances in second place. She bet $1,600 and she was RIGHT.

Kristin found the last Daily Double in “Latin Legalese.” She had the lead now with $11,400, $4,000 more than Parker in second place. She bet $1,600 but she was WRONG. (Didn’t quite catch that tentative guess).

Kristin finished in the lead with $9,400. Parker was next with $7,400 and Frances was right behind him with $7,200.

NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right — for the 4th day in a row!

WHAT IS THE VOLGA?

“The Volga is the longest river in Europe… and is widely viewed as the national river of Russia…. Some of the largest reservoirs in the world can be found along the Volga. The river has a symbolic meaning in Russian culture and is often referred to as Volga-Matushka (Volga-mother) in Russian literature and folklore.” (wikipedia) It belongs to the closed basin of the Caspian Sea, the largest enclosed inland body of water on Earth by area, variously classed as the world’s largest lake or a full-fledged sea.

Frances wrote down the Arne. If she meant the Arno, that flows into the Tyrhennian Sea, not an inland body of water. She lost $5,200 and finished with $2,000.

Parker bet everything he had, but crossed his answer out so he had nothing and he ended up with nothing.

Kristin wrote down the Zambezi, Africa’s 4th largest river which flows into the Indian Ocean. She lost $5,401 so she finished with $3,999 and that won today’s game. Kristin’s 3-day total is $17,498.
