Final Jeopardy: Rulers in History (1-10-12)

The Final Jeopardy question (1/10/2012) in the category “Rulers in History” was:

Born in 1672 & named for a saint, in 1703 he founded a city whose name represents both of them.

Two-day champ Dan McShane came back today to try for a third win. These two new contestants came on board to try for a first win: Jennifer Osorio from Huntington Beach, CA and Bryan Barnett from Potomac Falls, Va.

What is it with Alex reading the quote in the clue “The actual quote from this star of gangster films was ‘you dirty yellow-bellied rat’ in a James Cagney voice? Way to give it away, Alex! Bryan buzzed in first.

Dan was in the lead with $4,800 when he found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “It Might Surprise You.” He bet $1,200 and he was RIGHT.

It’s not one large bone below the waist, it’s five bones, the coccyx, the ilium, the ischium, the pubis and the sacrum. show

Dan finished the round with a runaway lead of $7,200. Jennifer was second with $3,200 and Bryan was last with $2,400.

In Double Jeopardy, Bryan found the first Daily Double in “Architecture.” He had $6,800. Alex went right into his “take the lead away” spiel and we wish we could have deciphered Bryan’s response. “You’re sounding like Sean Connery now,” Alex said. Bryan bet $4,000. He was RIGHT and was quite jubilant about it.

The six Corinthian columns of the New York Stock Exchange facade are among the reasons the building is considered a masterpiece of this architectural style, the true inspiration from Greek and Roman models. show

There was no second Daily Double today because incredibly, time ran out with 5 clues still on the board.

Dan finished in the lead with $10,800, but he no longer had that runaway. Bryan was second with $8,000 and Jennifer went into Final Jeopardy with $7,200.

Dan finished writing his reply before the Final Jeopardy! music ended. Bryan was shaking his head like he had no idea. We couldn’t get a bead on Jennifer. TWO of the contestants got the correct answer.

WHO IS PETER THE GREAT?

“On May 16, 1703 (May 27 by the modern calendar) St. Petersburg’s fortress (the Peter and Paul Fortress) was founded and that day became the official birthday of the city.” Saint Petersburg.com”.

Alex said this was a toughie twice but we thought it was rather obvious. We didn’t think it was nearly as tough as some of those tricky clues in “Sounds Like a Capital City” and “Missing Links,” or even the Daily Double in the Double Jeopardy round, did you?

Jennifer got it and bet $7,199, bringing her total today to $14,399.

Ryan couldn’t come up with an answer and that cost him his whole $8,000!

Dan was also correct and won the game with a $5,201 bet. His winnings today of $16,001 brought his 3-day total to $40,401.
